Province to create a 10-year plan to end homelessness (news release - October 29, 2007)

Homeless Initiatives
The Community-Based Homeless Initiatives demonstrates a provincial commitment in partnership with other levels of government, municipalities, and organizations, private and non-profit housing sectors in finding effective, long-term housing solutions.

Recognizing that each community is different, requiring locally based housing solutions, this strategy addresses the unique needs of Alberta’s seven major communities in combating homelessness. Based on approved community plans, the initiative allocates $1 million annually each to Edmonton and Calgary, and $200,000 annually each to Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat.

Shelters/Transitional Housing
Alberta Municipal Affairs and Housing provides funding to support services provided in shelters and transitional housing for the homeless and hard-to-house, located primarily in the major urban centres across the province.

In 2006-2007 the provincial government committed $23 million to support agencies providing emergency or transitional shelter spaces to address the short-term housing needs of the homeless populations in the seven major municipalities in Alberta. Funding was allocated to 25 emergency shelters that provide 2,505 spaces across the province.
