The Public Safety Division provides a framework of safety codes, standards and processes to promote and enforce the safe construction, operation and maintenance of buildings, facilities and associated equipment.

The division is also responsible for supporting development of public safety policy and administering the Tank Site Remediation Program, which assists municipalities and other eligible owners of current or former gas station sites with cleaning up contamination caused by leaking underground petroleum storage tanks.

Safety codes and standards protect the public. For example, they regulate the way buildings are designed, built, or renovated to protect the health and safety of occupants. As another example, they regulate major changes to a home's electrical system or gas furnace. These changes have the potential to threaten public safety if not done properly. That's why permits may be needed before the job is started. The changes and the materials used need to conform with various codes and standards. An inspection may be required before the new installation can be approved.
